Description (What the record is about)
-
Covering the various Ecclesiastical Corporations, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; The transfer of Bishopric Estates to the Commissioners was provided for by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners Act 1860, part II. The effect of this was that whenever a see was vacated its assets, with certain exceptions, were transferred to the Commissioners without any deed or other document. Assets transferred this way were not listed, this was done by the EC surveyors - Cluttons and Smiths Gore resulting in series of maps and survey volumes. Other transfers had taken place by agreement before 1860 and were dealt with by Orders in Council, which often contain helpful schedules listing the assets transferred. The final permanent estates were dealt with similarly under the Commissioners in 1950s. Chapter and prebendal estates were dealt with similarly under the Ecclesiastical Commissioners Act 1840. ; The estates of preferments already vacant at the passing of the act were vested in the Commissioners on the passing of that Act (11 Aug 1840).; Both Acts are available online on www.legislation.gov.uk
