Description

MANOR OF BLEDLOW (LATE CORHAMS), COURT ROLLS AND DEEDS; DEEDS TO PROPERTY (INCLUDING PAPER MILLS) IN BLEDLOW, SAUNDERTON AND PRINCES RISBOROUGH

There are two parts of this accumulation: firstly the court records and documents of title to the manor of Bledlow (late Corhams), which was purchased in 1826 by Luke Leake, and secondly the documents relating to the estate which Henry Williams, papermaker, built up from the 1790s.

Note

In the following list, the appellation Corhams manor is used for manor of Bledlow (late Corhams), in conformity with the practice of the Victoria County History and to avoid confusion with the main manor of Bledlow, known as Bledlow Manor (for which a few copies also survive in this accumulation). It is not clear whether all the Corhams manor copies relate to Mr. White's title: some of these may simply be steward's drafts and copies of documents relating to transactions within the manor, but to which the lord of the manor was not party.

"
Arrangement

The documents were received in disarray: the order imposed in this list is therefore artificial.

Physical condition
Many documents in this accumulation have suffered badly, prior to their deposit in this Office, from exposure to water. Some are barely legible, and others, mostly twentieth century legal correspondence, were beyond repair and have been destroyed. In addition, there remains one box of uncatalogued material which awaits repair.
Administrative / biographical background

Williams' estate was split up within two decades of its creation: the papermaking business (which comprised two papermaking mills, one at Saunderton and the other at Bledlow) was sold to the wholesale stationers Magnay and Pickering in 1820, and the rest of this estate was mortgaged and then sold to William Morten in 1821. On Morten's death in 1829, his estate was administered by trustees. It is presumed that Robert White bought both the manor and the property once owned by Morten but no deeds survive here for these conveyances.
