Administrative / biographical background

The Gerards obtained the manors of Ashton-in-Makerfield and Windle by marriage about 1330. Thomas Gerard was created a baronet in 1611 and Robert Gerard became Lord Gerard of Brynn in 1876. The Cantsfield estate came in by marriage in 1696, while as "founder's kin" they have long been connected with Repton School in Derbyshire. A Tasburgh marriage in 1780 brought in properties in Lincolnshire, London, Kent and Ireland.
