Description

Survey volume W1 is the first in the series of two 'W' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Peterborough, which were transferred to Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Pickering & Smith. The preferments in this volume concern the Peterborough Chapter Estates, which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on the following dates: 25 March 1853 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 2 May 1854 by Order in Council; and 5 December 1882 (date published in the London Gazette by Order in Council). ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports. ; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the Peterborough Capitular Estates originally commuted on 2 May 1854 was re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation on 1 November 1862 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 24 March 1863. These estates were then subsequently transferred back again to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 25 March 1935 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 12 June 1936 by Order in Council.; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporate later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Northamptonshire, parishes of Ailsworth, Castor, Eye, Newborough, Etton, Glinton, Longthorpe, Milton, Maxey, Northborough, Paston, Peakirk, Peterborough, Peterborough St. John the Baptist, Irthlingborough, Wansford & Woodford; the county of Huntingdonshire, parishes of Alwalton, Glatton, Orton Longville [Orton Longueville], & Yaxley; the county of Leicestershire, parishes of Great Easton & Bringhurst; the county of Nottinghamshire, parishes of Cromwell, South Collingham, North Collingham & Weston; the county of Lincolnshire, parishes of Cowbit, Fiskerton, Reepham & Scotter; the county of Cambridgeshire, parish of Wisbech; and the counties of Cambridge and Norfolk, parish of Upwell.
