Lewisham Local History Society was founded in 1961 on the initiative of the then Borough Librarian, Roy Rates. Since 1965 it has also covered the former Metropolitan Borough of Deptford.
In the late 1960s the Society began collecting museum objects, with the intention that they should form a basic collection for a future Borough Museum. Since 1971 the museum collection has been stored in Lewisham Libraries premises - originally in the flat above New Cross Library, which was shared with Lewisham Natural History Society.
The Society has published various pamphlets and booklets on local history since 1975, and annual Transactions from 1963 to 1988; the Transactions were replaced by the Lewisham History Journal from 1993. All the Society's publications are in the book collection at the Local History Centre.
