Description (What the record is about)
-
Letters, in original and copied forms. Most are letters from Sir Richmond Shakespear to his immediate family. In addition, there is some political and military correspondence. Much of the content of the family letters concerns the reporting of military life and actions.
It should be noted that although the letters in copied form, where they exist, are usually more legible, they are not in all cases exact copies: some omit passages, and some exhibit stylistic modification. It is not known when the copies were made. Where handwriting is difficult to read, either [?] has been used or [illegible]. All place names as given in the original documents, some with inconsistent orthography.
