Gallantry Notes: MC: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of a large number of machine guns grouped for a barrage.The section having suffered considerable casualties in officers and men, he left his headquarters, reorganised at least two sections for action and laid the majority of guns himself under a heavy hostile barrage.

2nd bar to MC: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an attack by our troops, this officer showed the greatest courage and determination in pushing through the enemy barrage over and over again, to visit the front line and ascertain the position and condition of his men and guns. On one occasion he was wounded, but did not desist from his efforts, and the example of his coolness and disregard of danger in carrying out these personal visits to the front line had the greatest and most inspiring effect on his men.;

Other Data: War Diary of 95 Coy 28/9/1917 "Recommendation s for New Years Honours were called for today and the following were put forward - Lieut Andrew Scott Nicoll for gallant and continual good service for over 20 months and his conduct has always been an example of gallantry and determination to all. This was especially these case during operations in front of Thelus (April 9th) and la Coulotte (April 23rd) when he commanded his guns with conspicuous coolness and courage" Recommended for the Military Cross.
