Papers of Sir William Chauncy Cartwright (1853-1933), diplomat, brother of Julia Cartwright.
The papers include correspondence of Sir Henry Drummond Charles Wolff who was sent to discuss with the Turkish government the future of Egypt. In October 1885 he concluded a convention under which both parties sent a special commission to Egypt to reorganise and reform the Egyptian army and administration. In January 1887 he signed a second convention in Constantinople stipulating the withdrawal of British forces from Egypt and providing for the security of Egypt.
Also included are papers concerning a memorandum written by Cartwright in 1910 concerning the history of the purchase of the Khedive's interest in Suez Canal shares in 1875, with the original agreement between the British Government and the Suez Canal Company for widening the canal, 10 July 1883.
These papers include some of Hugh Culling Eardley Childers, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and letters from Henry Oppenheim, banker.

Cartwright was secretary to Sir H.D.C. Wolff at Philippopolis, 1878-9, and to Lord E. Fitzmaurice at Constantinople, 1880. He was Acting Agent and Consul-General in Egypt in 1882; Acting Second Secretary in Venezuela, 1893; secretary to Lord Herschell in Quebec and Washington, and Chief Clerk Foreign Office, 1900-13.
