Description

Dispatches no. 570, and 94 to 103, plus attached enclosures from the Secret Department, Bombay [Mumbai] Castle. Dispatch 102 is missing from this collection. Despatch number 570: Secret Department: enclosures to a letter to the Secretary at East India House, dated 1 August 1839 (ff 3-6); Despatch number 94: Printed papers and a letter on the abolition by the Chinese Government of the trafficking of opium and the suspension of foreign trade at the port of Canton (ff 7-26); Despatch number 96: Abstract of contents of despatch to the Secret Committee, dated 1 September 1839 (ff 27-267); Despatch number 97: Proceedings on the works in the harbour and at the fort of Bombay (ff 268-294); Despatch number 98: Abstract of contents of proceedings before the judicial commissioner on the prisoners' trial for a disturbance in Deccan (ff 295-297); Despatch number 99: Abstract of contents of proceedings regarding an attack on the Malwan Treasury on 22 March 1839 (ff 298-305); Despatch number 100: Proceedings and despatches on Aden in 1839 (ff 306-444); Despatch number 101: Papers regarding Monsieur Lederer, who was prevented from travelling to Bussorah [Basra] (ff 445-449); Despatch number 103: Proceedings and despatches on Karrack, 1839 (ff 450-635)

Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the inside front cover with 1 and terminates at the inside back cover with 637; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. A previous foliation sequence, which is also circled, has been superseded and therefore crossed out. The file contains a number of newspaper cuttings which have been foliated in the order that they appeared in the volume (ff 18-27); for conservation purposes, these folios have been removed and stored separately.
