Additional documents deposited in the Nottinghamshire Record Office by Messrs. Tallents and Company, solicitors, Newark. May 1965.
This large additional deposit from Messrs. Tallents and Company is of considerable variety and interest. The deeds and leases relate mainly to Newark and nearby parishes, and date from the 16th century. Manorial records include an Elizabethan roll for the Soke of Dunham, and the Newark material is particularly interesting, including court books intermingling wapentake, frankpledge and market court entries of the late 16th and 17th centuries in a manner suggesting that these aspects of manorial business were not sharply differentiated; and a very full run of draft court papers of all kinds from 1681 to 1895, from which the court rolls were evidently compiled, thus showing the detailed working of the court. Further enclosure papers show partial enclosure taking place at Balderton in 1661, a failed attempt to enclose Marnham, 1817-1824, and many of the working papers in the Ossington and Wellow enclosures.
Other noteworthy sections of the deposit include a number of wills, some working papers re. tithe commutation, partnership and insolvency deeds and accounts throwing some light on trade in Newark in the 18th and early 19th centuries, and a number of maps and plans.
Among numerous miscellaneous items of interest may be noted the articles of agreement of Matthew and John Sheppard, bricklayers, with the Commissioners for Newark Charities, to take down buildings in the Market Place, Newark, and to execute the brickwork for the new Town Hall to the designs of Mr. Carr, architect.
Deeds of title and cognate papers.
