Description (What the record is about)

There are two types of record of excommunication: firstly the excommunications themselves, which were published in the parish church of the person being excommunicated, and secondly schedules of excommunication, which list groups of people from several parishes who were excommunicated on the same day, probably as a result of a visitation. In almost all cases, individuals were excommunicated on the grounds of contumacy for non-appearance at court, after having been cited to appear; other grounds for excommunication are noted in the list. Since some excommunications deal with people who are listed in more than one schedule, the excommunications have been listed separately from the schedules
