Description

(1) pp. i-iv, List of Contents, i.e. Husbulhookums and Farmans of the year 1717. (2) pp. 1-88, Husbulhookums of the year 1717 concerning Dastaks, Settlement of New Factories, Robberies, Currency of Madras and Bombay Rupees, Original Sanads and Farmans, Surat and Patna Houses, Peshcush in lieu of Customs, Exemption from Customs at Surat, Hugli and Hyderabad, the Mint at Murshidabad, Shipwrecks, Rebellions Zamindars, Divy Island, Vizagapatam and Trivatore villages, Desertion of Company's Debtors, Calcutta Towns, Coja Sarhaud's letters, Farrukhsiyar's Farman, Jafar Khan's parwanas to Samuel Feake at Cossimbazar and the Vizir's Title as appended to all Farmans. (3) pp. 91-4, Farman [for the Fort of St. George] granted to Sir William Langhorne 31st Jan. 1671/2. This is one of the Papers copies by Richard Browne (a writer at Madras) and included in the Appendices to Streynsham Master's Diary (see Factory Records, Miscellaneous, Vol. XIV) but not included in Sir Richard Temple's edition (see Temple's Diaries of Streynsham Master, pp. ix, x) because it had no direct connection with Master's Diaries. For this farman see Col. H. D. Love's Vestiges of Old Madras, vol. i, p. 344. (4) pp. 97-102, Farman for Metchepatam called ''The Golden Phyrmaund.'' Also in Master's Diaries but excluded by Temple for the same reason as (3) above. Printed in The English Factories, 1634-36, p. 14. (5) pp. 103-10, Shah Shuja's Nishan for Bengal. Obtained by Matthias Vincent at Dacca in 1678 (Printed in Temple's Diaries of Streynsham Master, II, 21. See also I, 34). (6) pp. 113-5, Ruffee Chan Nabob of Orissa's Grant for confirming the English in their privileges in his Kingdom (Printed in Temple's Diaries of Streynsham Master, II, 25). (7) pp. 117-9, Cowle given by Steeranga [? Sriranga] Rails to Agent Ivie 15th Nov. 1643. Printed in the 1642-45 volume of the same series, p. 305. (8) pp. 121-6, Cowle given by Nabob Yeckman (or Neckman) Cawne to Sir William Langhorne, Governor and Council of Fort St. George in Chinapatam 23rd Feb. 1671/2. See note above on (3). (9) pp. 127-31, Mr. [Thomas] Morton's Notes on the Madras Farmans.
