The Uckfield and Crowborough edition of the Sussex Express reported on 13 April 1951 (page 1 column 6) that children attended the Uckfield County Secondary School for the first time on 10 April, when the first of three planned stages were opened, with the completed school being able to accommodate 450 children. Although the buildings were not then fully equipped, the newspaper reported that 'the children have been greatly impressed by the amenities provided. They never expected the blackboards to be illuminated by florescent lighting! They appreciate the spacious classrooms which let in plenty of light and air.' The second stage will make provision for a gymnasium, a library and a school cinema. The official opening was to take place after the building was completed
There were then 148 children at the school, the majority of whom had been at Uckfield Parochial School. The head teacher was Mr H F Pearmain, MA who had been in charge of Wedge's Boarding School, Itchingfold for five years
