Description

From: the prior of St Gregory's Priory, Canterbury; Henry de Sandford, archdeacon of Canterbury; the penitentiary of Canterbury Cathedral Priory Pope Honorius III by a mandate, cited, dated 13 Dec at St Peter's, appointed them judges delegate in a case brought by the cathedral priory against the abbess and convent of Guînes ('Gines') [Thérouanne diocese, Flanders], Mgr G de Aquila, rector of Gillingham, and others from Canterbury and Rochester dioceses concerning tithes and other matters. The dispute between the cathedral priory and the abbess and convent, who act for the church of 'Aluuesbregge' (?Aloesbridge), concerns 3 parishioners, who are Wulmer ('Wlmerus'), the heir of Ralph the white, and Richard son of Edwin; the tithes of the 6 acres of salt land on which they live; the tithes of 12 acres of 'Snawerelande'; and a third of 4s 5d payable by the rector of 'aluuesbrege'. The cathedral priory claim that these belong to Fairfield church through an agreement between the priory and John, rector. The case had been brought before Archbishop Stephen [Langton] 'auctoritate ordinaria'. The abbey has paid 2 marks as compensation for the almonry to O, monk, then almoner ('elemosinarie provisor'). The priory has granted that all the above belong to the abbey. Defines the abbey's rights to the almonry's lands which are to be enclosed from the sea and to their inhabitants ('inquilinus'), and the cathedral priory's rights to lands belonging to Brenzett ('Brunesette') church which are to be enclosed from the sea and to their inhabitants. Written in the year when Archbishop Stephen returned from the General Council [ie 4th Lateran] held by Pope Innocent III and the 3rd year of Honorius III. [Date: 3rd year of Honorius III. Langton returned to England in May 1218 (K Major (ed), Acta Stephani Langton, p165).] Given at Canterbury Cathedral Priory. Endorsed with description in contemporary hand.
