Administrative / biographical background

The Amalgamated Society of Railway Vehicle Builders, Wheelwrights, Carpenters and Mechanics was founded in 1891. The headquarters and general offices of the union were situated in Wigan, off Bridgeman Terrace, and the first general secretary was Mr. James Lancaster. There were branches in St. Helens, Earlestown, Yorkshire, Newcastle, Scotland and Wales. At one time two branches existed for a short time in Wigan, possibly owing to a disagreement over policy. However, they merged again to form the only Wigan branch, and in 1946 merged with the AEU.
