The records in this series comprise archives created in the Secretariat of the Colony of Aden relating mainly to the Colony but also to the Protectorate, together with a few files from separate departments. In addition there are the records of the Administrators of the islands of Kamaran and Perim, some of which pre-date the colonial period.

On 1 April 1937 Aden was officially separated from the control of the Government of India and became a Crown Colony. The Governor of Aden reported direct to the Colonial Office. The Political Officers in Aden had since 1934 increased from two members to twelve in 1941.
