Administrative / biographical background

The area of which the drainage was directed to the River Arun was listed in Part I of the First Schedule to the Land Drainage Act, 1930, and was therefore designated a Catchment Area for the purposes of the Act. A Board was constituted for the Catchment Area on 8 November 1930 by the River Arun Catchment Area Constitution Order, 1930 [Statutory Rules and Orders, 1930, No. 909, made by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries under s. 3 of the Land Drainage Act, 1930 (20 and 21 George V, c. 44).]

The rights and obligations of the Commissioners of Sewers for the Rape of Arundel over the 'main river' were transferred to the Catchment Board on 5 October 1931 by the River Arun Catchment Board Transfer Order, 1931 [S. R. & O., 1931, No. 877, made by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries under s. 4(1)(a) of the Land Drainage Act, 1930 (20 and 21 George V, c. 44).]. The powers and duties of the Commissioners of Sewers for the Rape of Arundel acting as the Arun Internal Drainage Board were transferred to the Catchment Board by the River Arun Catchment Board (Transfer of Powers of the Rape of Arundel Commissioners of Sewers) Order, 1933 [Made by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries under s. 11 of the Land Drainage Act, 1930 (20 and 21 George V, c. 44)]; consequently the records of the Catchment Board after this date include the records of the Catchment Board acting as the River Arun Internal Drainage Board

The Catchment Board was dissolved on 1 October 1950, its functions passing to the West Sussex River Board by the West Sussex River Board Constitution Order, 1950 [Statutory Instruments, 1950, No. 974, made by the Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries, and Health, under s. 1 of the River Boards Act, 1948 (11 and 12 George VI, c. 32).]
