An examination of the principles of the deity and our passions as deliver'd by Mr. Francis Hutcheson in his Inquiry Concerning Moral Good and Evil, his Illustration of his Moral Sense, and his Essay on the Nature and Conduct of the Passions and Affections. With An attempt to defend Mr. Locke's Treatise of Human Understanding from some mistaken charges of his. And a letter prefixed to Mr. Hutcheson concerning the Root of Benevolence. To which are subjoined: A review of some of Mr. Wollaston's sentiments in his Religion and Nature Delineated. An enquiry into the justice of the charge of error and inconsistency in Mr. Locke's thoughts on the soul in his Treatise of the Understanding. And observations on a treatise intitled An Enquiry into the Nature of the Human Soul wherein the immateriality of the soul is (said to be) evinced from principles of reason and philosophy, with an examination of the charges therein of peremptoriness and absurdity in the writings of Mr. Locke'. Anonymous writings on moral philosophy and metaphysics, written in response to works by Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746), William Wollaston (1659-1724) and Andrew Baxter (1686/7-1750). Hutcheson published: 'An inquiry into the original of our ideas of beauty and virtue: in two treatises. I. Concerning beauty, order, harmony, design. II. Concerning moral good and evil' (London, 1725). 'An essay on the nature and conduct of the passions and affections: with illustrations on the moral sense' (London, 1728). pp. 311-349. 'A review of some of Mr. Wollaston's sentiments in his Religion of Nature Delineated'. 'The Religion of Nature Delineated ' by William Wollaston (1659-1724) was privately printed in 1722 and first published in 1724. pp. 351-420. 'Observations on a treatise intitled An Enquiry into the Nature of the Human Soul wherein the immateriality of the soul is (said to be) evinced from principles of reason and philosophy. With an examination of the charges therein of peremptoriness and absurdity in Mr. Locke's sentiments of matter and the soul in his Essay Concerning Human Understanding and other parts of his writings'.
