Description (What the record is about)
-
The church of The Good Shepherd in Dyke Road was built in two stages, and replaced a temporary iron building, which continued to be used by the Sunday School and church groups. The first stage was designed by Edward Warren, 20 Bedford Square, London, architect, on 13 July 1921 and the plans were approved by Brighton CB on 28 July. This portion was constructed at the expense of Mrs Gerald Moor in memory of her late husband, the Revd Gerald Moor, MA, who had been vicar of Preston from 1905 to 1916. The second stage was completed in 1927.
The building, which is in the post-war Gothic style, consists of a chancel, a nave of five bays with ambulatory aisles, a lady chapel, a chapel of remembrance and a tower which contains 8 bells. The first four bays were consecrated in 1922 and the rest of the church in 1927. The east widow and the others contain stained glass, there is a rood cross and figures and also some old Italian wrought iron gates (Kelly's Sussex Directory, 1927 and 1938).
The vicarage, 272 Dyke Road, was also designed by Edward Warren; the plans bear the date 6 December 1923 and were approved by Brighton CB on 20 December. The vicarage was located next to the church and the plans show the first stage of the church as built and the future extension.
The parish was created in 1922 from parts of the parishes of Preston St Peter and St Luke Prestonville.
