Ms diary (148pp), with photocopied ts transcript (89pp), for December 1941 - June 1942 kept by a surgeon with the Colonial Medical Service working in Kowloon, Hong Kong describing the atmosphere there immediately prior to the Japanese attack on the colony, his temporary detention with other medical staff in a local Chinese school until his transfer to Argyle Street camp on Christmas Eve 1941 and conditions in that camp, with particular reference to the extremely poor sanitation and diet, their very adverse effects on the health of the soldiers and internees under his care, and the general low morale and dishonesty of his fellow inmates. In June 1942 Dr Newton was transferred to Stanley civilian internment camp in Hong Kong and the collection includes scripts of two stage reviews which he wrote and produced there, six illustrations advertising talks that he gave in the camp, and a hand-drawn Christmas card for 1944.
