1302. Wheal Towan. Jan., Feb., Apr., Jun., Jul.1784. 23 items.
Double-acting engine, with 18 inch cylinder, 4 foot stroke, rack & sector motion.

General section of the engine, inside front view of the engine and cross-section of the boiler, plan of the engine and boiler and T bobs - reverse drawing; unmarked section of the engine house and framing; sections and plans of the cylinder, condenser pump and eduction pipe and condenser vessel, plan and cross-section of the boiler, boiler and perpendicular steam pipes - reverse drawings; views and sections of nozzles - 4 full size reverse drawings; rack and sector motion - reverse drawing; T bobs, coupling brasses, rack and sector motion.
The following drawings were also used for Crane Mine [see Portfolio 5/1303 below]: condensers for Wheal Towan and Crane - reverse drawing marked "2nd drawing"; stuffing box - reverse drawing; plummer blocks and brasses; front view of the working gear - original and reverse drawings; side view of the working gear - 2 copies, 1 unmarked; "Machine to be fixed on the Y shafts for regulating the opening of the steam regulators" - 2 copies, 1 unmarked.

Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 53. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 302.

For Wheal Towan. The engine was stopped in Jan. 1787 and sold to John Morris of Morriston, near Swansea. When it was erected at his works in 1788 it was converted into a rotative engine with sun and planet wheels, and the rack and sector motion was replaced by a link and roller. A new book, No. 96, was opened for drawings prepared for Morris.
