A County Medical Officer was first appointed in 1893, subject to the Public Health Committee of the County Council. A summary of the growth of the responsibilities of the Council will be found in the Introduction to County Council Minutes for Health and Social Services.
The detailed Annual Reports of the County Medical Officer [oab]CCC2/2[cab] incorporate summary reports from the district medical officers.
The office was abolished after the National Health Service Reorganisation Act of 1973 transferred the remaining responsibilities of the County Council for health care to the new Regional Health Authorities.
