Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)
-
Altrincham Wesleyan Circuit was formed in 1838 out of the Manchester Wesleyan Circuit. From 1850 it was known as Sale and Altrincham Wesleyan Circuit until a separate Sale Circuit was formed in 1886. Churches belonging to the circuit were: Altrincham Bank Street Wesleyan, Altrincham Borough Road Wesleyan, Higher Baguley Wesleyan, Millington Booth Bank Wesleyan, Bowdon Wesleyan, Bowdon Vale Wesleyan, Broadheath Wesleyan, Hale Wesleyan and Timperley Wesleyan. After the Methodist Union of 1932 the circuit was renamed Altrincham Methodist Circuit and was augmented by a new church, Brownley Green Methodist in Wythenshawe, by Altrincham George Street ex-Methodist New Connexion and by churches from Lymm and Altrincham Primitive Methodist Circuit in 1935, namely Altrincham Oxford Road ex-PM, Carrington ex-PM and Dunham Massey (Woodhouses) ex-PM. Closure and amalgamation have brought about a decline in the number of churches and Altrincham Circuit currently comprises Altrincham Methodist on Barrington Road, Bowdon Vale Methodist (ex-Wesleyan), Hale Methodist (ex-Wesleyan) and Timperley Methodist (ex-Wesleyan).
