Description

Pumping and Canal Engines. (28 items).
558. Wanlockhead Mine. Jun., Aug. 1785, Apr.-Jun. 1786. 28 items.
Single-acting engine, with 55 inch cylinder, 8 foot stroke, chain connection.

Set of numbered reverse drawings: 1 - general view of the engine, 2 - ground plan of the engine and boiler, 3 - first floor plan of the engine and boiler, 4 - inside front view of the engine and boiler, with cross-section of boiler, [No. 5 wanting], 6 - condenser, hot water pump etc., 7 - martingales, air pump cross bar, beam strap ends, glands etc., 8 - great and condenser chain links and catch pin, 9 - piston rod cross bar and cap, 10 - boiler steam pipe, 11 - adjusting screw for the great chain, 12 - fire door frame.
Also reverse plan and sections of the engine house marked 'Wanlockhead No. 2'; working gear - partially coloured original and partially coloured reverse plans of the upper and lower working gear, front and side views of the working gear; balance beam - coloured drawing marked "Duplicate"; pump rod, buckets etc., air pump and hot water pump buckets (reverse drawing), nozzles (reverse drawing); valve seats, clack door etc. - 1820s copy.
Also sheet of notes and calculations, Jun. 1785; 'A Plan of the Water Course for the Fire Engine injection water', 1785, showing Wanlock Burn, site of the engine, shaft etc.; 'coarse' ground plan of the engine and boiler houses; coloured ground plan of the engine and boiler houses with boiler, May 1786.

For Gilbert Meason of Edinburgh and partners. Wanlockhead lead mine, near Dumfries. This was the second engine at Wanlockhead mine; the first was an engine with a 36 inch cylinder and 7½ foot stroke erected in 1779 [see Portfolio 5/649a], which became worn out and was replaced by this one. This engine stopped working when the mine was exhausted in 1797.
