After the Local Government Act, 1929, the functions of the Guardians of the Poor were transferred to the public assistance and social welfare committees of county and city councils. (The Norwich committee's minutes are deposited at the record office under the reference N/TC 31). The Bowthorpe Road institution, also known as Woodlands Hospital, was the former workhouse with workhouse infirmary and some of the records listed below were partly compiled during the pre-1930 period (for earlier Norwich poor law records see N/GP1-2). After reforms of 1946-1948 medical duties became the responsibility of the Ministry of Health's local hospital boards, leaving local authorities to supervise the welfare of children and old people. The records listed below were received from the West Norwich Hospital, Bowthorpe Road.
