Description

Three treatises by Sir John Fortescue (1394?-1476?), Lord Chief-Justice. Early 16th century. Items (2) and (3) are probably in the same hand.

(1) 'Hic sequitur memorativum quoddam de contentis in subsequenti libello. Opusculum de natura legis naturae et de eius censura in successione regnorum suprema'.

Printed from this MS., which is the only known MS. of both parts, in Works of Sir John Fortescue, ed. Lord Clermont, 1869, I, 63-184 (ff.1-102).

(2) Chapters 1-18 (though apparently complete) of 'The difference betwene dominium regale et dominium politicum et regale'. The treatise is sometimes known as 'The Governance of England' or 'Monarchia'. Printed op.cit., 461-73 (ff.106-128v).

(3) 'The declaration made by John Fortescu Knyght uppon certen writyngs sent oute of Scotlond agenste the Kyng's title to hys Realme of Englond'. Printed op.cit., 523-41 (ff.129-40).

Belonged to John Selden and inscribed by him in Greek: Peri pantos ten Eleutherian.
