Bourton-on-the-Water Hospital, the third cottage hospital in England, was established by John Moore, the first Medical Officer. Buryfield Cottage, leased by him in 1861, was superceded in 1879 by a new building on a different site, which was in turn succeeded by the present hospital in 1928.
The hospital was taken over by the National Health Service in 1948 and is still in use [1979]
