The Royal Society of Arts was founded in 1754 by William Shipley as the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, and was granted a Royal Charter in 1847, and the right to use the term 'Royal' in its name was granted by King Edward VII in 1908. Members have been called 'Fellows' from 1941 onwards, and are elected from 80 countries worldwide. Notable past and present Fellows and Members include Charles Dickens, Benjamin Franklin, Stephen Hawking, Karl Marx, Adam Smith, Marie Curie, Nelson Mandela, David Attenborough, Judi Dench, William Hogarth, John Diefenbaker, and Tim Berners-Lee; Richard Hoggart was elected a Fellow in 1980.
