The original Swan Coates Company was founded in 1864 and opened in January 1866. The company occupied iron works at Cargo Fleet near Middlesbrough. The company operated mines at Whitecliffe, Saltburn and Ormesby. In 1872 John Swan acquired the remaining shares in The North Cleveland Ironstone Company Limited, the lease in turn transferring to Swan, Coates and Co. Despite such acquisitions, the company struggled amidst the 1870s decline in the iron industry, with Swan, Coates and Company subsequently liquidated in 1876. In 1883 the works re-launched under the guise of Cargo Fleet Iron Company, Colonel Henry D. Swan the chairman, J.G. Swan the managing director.
