Administrative / biographical background

Goldsmiths? was established in 1905 with 3 departments:1) Training Department2) School of Art3) Evening Department

This structure continued to 1965, when1) Training Department became the Department of Arts, Sciences and Education2) School of Art became the Department of Fine Art?but appears to have continued to use the name ?School of Art? on most occasions3) Evening Department became the Department of Adult Studies

This structure continued to 1976, when these 3 departments, together with St Gabriel?s College and the Rachel McMillan College (teacher training institutions), both incorporated into Goldsmiths? in 1973-77, were reorganised into 5 schools:1) School of Adult and Social Studies2) School of Art and Design3) School of Education4) School of Humanities and Performing Arts5) School of Science and Mathematics

In 1980, the School of Adult and Social Studies was split into 2: the School of Adult and Community Studies and the School of Social Sciences

In 1986, the 6 Schools were reorganised into 3 Faculties:

1) Faculty of Education, (the former School of Education, into which the School of Adult and Community Studies?which was renamed Continuing and Community Education department-- was subsumed)2) Faculty of Arts (comprising the former Schools of Art and Design and Humanities (except Geography) and Performing Arts3) Faculty of Social and Mathematical Sciences (the Mathematical Sciences department of the former School of Science and Mathematics, plus Geography Department, renamed Resource and Environmental Management Department, which had been part of the former School of Humanities and Performing Arts)

The Earth and Life Sciences Departments in the former School of Science and Mathematics were made into a vestigial School of Natural History. However, Goldsmiths? stopped teaching these subjects shortly afterwards (1988-9), as a result of which these Science departments were transferred to Thames Polytechnic (Now University of Greenwich)
