National Coal Board records: These records were received direct from the Board. A high proportion is of 20th century date and pithead records, rather than company records, predominate. The records relate to the following companies and collieries. Inclusive dates are indicated for each colliery or group of collieries:
John Brown & Co. Ltd.: Aldwarke Main and Rotherham Main 1879-1948
United Steel Co. Ltd.: Treeton Colliery 1892-1948
Mitchell Main Colliery Co Ltd.: Mitchell Main 1871-1956, and Darfield Main 1877-1945
Newton Chambers & Co. Ltd.: Thorncliffe, Rockingham, Grange, Smithy Wood, Tankersley 1876-1947. (Includes duplicated correspondence of South Yorkshire Coal Owners' Association 1927-1946 and reports and papers of St. Lawrence Timber, Pulp and Steamship Co. 1916-1938)
Earl Fitzwilliam's Collieries Ltd.: Mainly cottage rents and rating. 1912-1953
Wharncliffe Silkstone Colliery Co.: (Many are F.C. Swallow's records) 1854-1949
Corton Wood Colliery Co.: Partnerships, leases, company accounts 1854-1946
Wombwell Main Colliery Co.: Wombwell Main 1885-1948 (but mainly 2nd World War period)
Doncaster Amalgamated Collieries Ltd.: Bullcroft Main, Markham Main, Hicketon Main, Firbeck Main, Brodsworth Main, 1896-1948
Manvers Main Colliery Co. Ltd.: Files of photocopies of leases, conveyances, etc. to the company of coal seams etc. in Wath, Swinton, Barnborough, Mexborough 1873-1945
Dearne Valley Colliery Co.: Mine at Little Houghton 1901-1947
Tinsley Park Colliery Co.: Kilnhurst or Thrybergh Hall collieries (previously worked by J. & J. Charlesworth, followed by Stewart & Lloyds Ltd.) 1855-1945
Carlton Main Colliery Co. Ltd.: Minutes of the company 1872-1945 (received from a different source, unknown provenance)
Title deeds deposited by the Coal Board:
Deeds to property in Dodworth and district acquired by J. & J. Charlesworth, coal masters (350). 1615-mid 19th century. The property consisted of farms and lands (not coal) in Dodworth (Pigott estate, Langford estate, Rhodes farm, Gleadhill Cliffe, Dodworth Hall, Field head, Lane head, Fall head), Hoylandswaine (Cathill foot), Barugh and Higham; Dodworth rental 1795-1830. (Families mentioned in the deeds (among others): Rooke, Rhodes, Pigott (pedigree), Brooke (pedigree, including Charles Brooke, Somerset Herald), Ellison, Perkins). Plans of estates in Dodworth 1747, 1836.
