According to the historical notes provided by the depositor (DDX 1725/1), by the 1930s there were two pharmacies in Liverpool Road, Penwortham. One was at no 22, started by L Tomlinson, and one at no 34 started by his son Clarence H Tomlinson.
22 Liverpool Road was later taken over by Charles Noblett, and then in 1977 by Godfrey W O'Donnell.
34 Liverpool Road was sold by C H Tomlinson to J R Jenkinson in 1970. He already had a business at no 54, opened in 1967. The pharmacy business was concentrated at no 54 in 1972 when no 34 closed (though it remained as a drugstore until 1986).
Mr Jenkinson also opened a pharmacy at 71-73 Pope Lane, Penwortham (Kingsfold) before 1970: it closed c1970 and later reopened. In 1982 Jenkinson and O'Donnell opened a consortium pharmacy (St Mary's) at the new Health Centre in Cop Lane. The business at 54 Liverpool Road then closed.
There were several other pharmacies in Penwortham.
