Depositor's mother was born in 1910 in Bobruisk, a small town in Belorussia (White Russia). Her grandfather and father were timber dealers who leased large tracts of forests from a wealthy landowner and employed many lumberjacks. The trees were exported all over the world. The family lived later in Baku, a port on the Caspian Sea, where the father had a timberyard and wharf, an oil tanker and leather factory. Baku was the gateway to Persia, and when the Bolshevik revolution reached it in 1919, the family escaped to Teheran (her father was a Menshevik). After 2 years they returned to Baku, father was arrested as a 'capitalist' and after his release, the family emigrated c.1923 to Palestine. Depositor's mother later went to study at the American Junior College in Beirut and in 1930 was appointed Senior Teacher of English in a girls' school in Baghdad (Alliance Israelite School). Here she met her husband who was teaching at the boys school. She now lives in Hull.
