Administrative / biographical background

The Goldhawk Mutual Benefit Building Society began life in West London in 1876. For almost 100 years it remained a small, independent building society offering mortgage and savings accounts to a small customer base. It had one permanent office on Chiswick High Road by the 1930s. In 1967, it changed it simplified its name to the Goldhawk Building Society and in 1975 it merged with the London Investment Building Society to form the London Goldhawk. After various mergers and names changes it became part of Nationwide in 1987.
