Description

Letters and copy letters from, to or concerning the successive perpetual curates, accumulated by the Hawkesworth family and their predecessors as patrons of the living. The correspondence mainly concerns their appointments, resignations and financial circumstances. The letters have been arranged in six chronological packets; the dates given below are the outside dates of the correspondence not of the particular curacy.

Packet 1 Reginald Bean, 1775 (1); Edward Whitley, 1784-94 (5); Wm. Langdon, 1802-20 (9); Richard C. Phelips, 1826 (3), including letter from the Bishop; John Jarratt, 1826-36 (9), including reference, 1832 to [? Sunday] school room being finished; G. Robbins, 1836 (4); Wm. Truell 1837-51 (12), including references to money raised for proposed building [not carried out] of a parsonage house, c.1841, and [? Sunday] school accounts, 1849, 1850.

Packets 2, 3 W. Greenslade, 1852-1875 (101), including many disagreements between patron and incumbent throughout the period - control of the Sunday school, finance, lack of parsonage house and action as law about the title to the churchyard.

Packet 4 Frederick Shepherd, 1875-1878 (46), including re-consideration of building parsonage house.

Packet 5 W.J.Rowland, 1884-1886, 1904 (9)

Packet 6 R.E.W.Cosens, 1904-1908 (43), including letters from the Bishop concerning his appointment and resignation; G.G.Monck, 1908-1911 (12).
