Includes plan of Mr W[illiam] S[amuel] Camp's houses in Sun Street, c1820 In 1711 Matthew Artridge sold a close of meadow (1a 1r) with barn near to the castle abutting west and north on the road from the town of Lewes to St John's Church to Gregory Haines, gent whose sister Mary Greenfield, widow, sold it to Thomas Friend, gent He died in 1762 leaving it to his nephew John Kemp who sold it to Thomas Kemp in 1771. In 1807 Thomas Kemp now of Coneyboroughs in Barcombe, sold to William Samuel Camp, baker, and Charles Wille, builder. They built 12 houses on the land and in 1820 Camp mortgaged the property to George Bailey, baker and Arthur Brook, sadler (treasurers of the Cliff and South Malling Amicable Society). Camp died in 1837 and the property was sold to William Rose, innkeeper who sold in 1853 to Charles Henry Beard, wine and spirit merchant. On his death it passed to his son Edward who died in 1868 leaving it to his son Thomas Edward Beard. He sold four of the houses, numbers 36, 38, 40 and 42 (formerly 28-31) to James Jenner, salesman. He died in 1889 leaving the property to his wife Mary Jane and brothers Edward, grocer and Philip Walter, printer. By 1900 it had passed to the children of Thomas James Jenner, engineer who then sold to Edward Blagrove, watchmaker and jeweller in 1904.
