A Mughal nobleman riding a dappled horse. Mughal, c.1620-30. Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807. Inscribed on the background in Persian (in the same unreliable hand as J.16,1 and J.64,40): 'kar-i usta[d] modi' (the work of Ustad Modi); Persian inventory note (not numbered). Gouache with gold, the background uncoloured; on an album page with blue and pink borders; paper extensions at top and bottom. 204 by 129 mm; page 382 by 234 mm. Reverse: three baits from a 'ghazal' written in 'nasta'liq' calligraphy by Muhammad Husain, with illuminated cornerpieces and a stencilled floral border on one side; 17th century. The nobleman is dressed in an orange jama and purple turban and has a falcon on the gauntlet of his right hand. The horse walks to the left, a pink plume on its bridle.
