Description (What the record is about)
-
R.M. is seised of the Manor of Shelve, which was bought from Sir Henry Lingen, whose descendants still keep the Courts Baron.
R.M. contracted some workmen from Derbyshire, to search for lead in some old lead mines on the manor, and he granted them a lease to search in common and enclosed grounds of the manor. After almost 1½ years the workmen found a vein of lead with a charge of £200 during which time E.L.H made no claim and did not forbide the workmen to work in the mines.
On 4 Feb. 1677 the workmen found 10 men in the house, armed with guns, pistols and swords. The latter had come to take possession of the mines on behalf of E.L.H. Violence was used to prevent the workmen from working and the intruders took away a tun of ore.
On 11 Feb. 1677 R.M. as lord of the manor of Shelve and taking one person with him as a witness, went to the mines and demanded entrance and possession of the works. The two men were kept away because of the weapons and E.L.H.'s men have been in possession of the mines since then.
R.M. wishes the case to be brought to trial, since no J.P or lawyer will intervene because of E.L.H's privileges of Parliament.
