Description

Letter of C B Osy [?Cornelis Boudewijn Ghislain, Baron Osy van Zegwaard], Worshipful Master and Abraham van de Velde Johanson, Secretary of Royal Frederick Lodge, Rotterdam, Holland to Rowland Holt, Deputy Grand Master, mentionng that the Lodge was constituted by Lord Aberdour and since that time have been in correspondence with Grand Lodge or with Anthony Ten Broeke and John Joseph De Vignoles, Deputy Provincial Grand Master for foreign lodges. The Lodges has not been in contact with the Grand Lodge for about fifteen years but has heard that a Convention between the Moderns' Grand Lodge and the Dutch Grand Lodge in 1771 and regrets that an agreement to enable lodges to meet under their respective constitutions was not communicated to them by the Moderns' Grand Lodge. Due to the loss of several members the Lodge has not been able to meet but members have continued to visit other lodges in Rotterdam. The Lodge aims for a revival and to join the Dutch Grand Lodge at the Hague and in consequence seeks the opinion of the English Grand Lodge.

Administrative / biographical background

Royal Frederick Lodge was granted a warrant by the Moderns' Grand Lodge to meet as No. 271 at Rotterdam, Holland on 25 January 1762. The Lodge was renumbered as No. 215 in 1770, as No. 173 in 1780, as No. 174 in 1781 and as No. 148 in 1792. The Lodge appears to have ceased meeting after 1785 and was erased from the roll of the United Grand Lodge of England after the Moderns' and Antients' Grand Lodges formed a union in 1813.
