The fund was formed in 1870 to augment the endowment of the poorer parishes in the diocese. Its resources could also be used to endow benefices in new parishes or districts, to support assistant clergy and to provide houses for incumbents. From 1959 its funds, together with those of the Stipends Fund and the Spiritual Aid Fund, were administered by the Stipends Committee, set up in that year as one of the four committees of the Board of Finance.
