Description

Records of West Sussex Record Office Additional Manuscripts

This is the thirty fourth volume of Additional Manuscripts (Add Mss) to have been catalogued in the West Sussex Record Office and it has been compiled, in general, along the lines indicated in the first volume in November 1956

The class of Additional Manuscripts embraces all the smaller gifts and deposits of documents received by the County Record Office, as distinct from the large family and estate collections, such as the Goodwood Mss., or accumulations from solicitors' offices, such as Oglethorpe and Anderson Mss.; collections of official bodies, such as Quarter Sessions Records; or collections from other bodies, such as the records of the Royal Sussex Regiment, each of which is referred to and quoted by name. The majority of such documents have been deeds of title, though increasingly a healthy balance of a vast range of other original material has been catalogued in these volumes. However, the pressure of the weight of material to be catalogued has meant that since volume twenty nine in March 1983, the catalogues of title deeds, instead of being the detailed calendars that had been the practice until then, have appeared in summary lists, with the emphasis being placed on the property concerned in the transaction, rather than on the parties involved, and the technicalities of the type of legal conveyance being used

This catalogue lists the usual number of small deposits, mostly concerning deeds of title, but it also includes family and estate papers of the Newnham Family of Ardingly, 1378-1929 (Add Mss 33,588-33,989) These documents are listed in a separate catalogue on A2A as 'Newnham Family of Ardingly', under the 'From Landlord to Labourer' project.; additional records of the Tudor Family of Fernhurst, 1833-1940 (Add Mss 34,630-34,654 and 34,665-34,666); and genealogical papers of the Wyatt family of Felpham and Aldingbourne, 1824-1977 (Add Mss 34,667-34,672). There are records of a number of local organizations, such as Chanctonbury Music Club, 1939-1947 (Add Mss 33,990); the Gatwick branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society, 1979-1983 (Add Mss 34,358); the Goodwood Golf Club, 1962-1979 (Add Mss 34,417-34,418); and various Regimental Associations of the Royal Sussex Regiment, 1939-1979 (Add Mss 34,682-34,690). For the first time, the catalogue includes a number of Ph.D. and M.A. thesis devoted to West Sussex, such as 'The Pastoral Roles of the English Episcopate in Canterbury Province, 1603-1625', by K.C. Fincham (Add Mss 34,655); 'The Diocese of Chichester, 1508-1558: Episcopal Reform under Robert Sherburne and its aftermath' by S.J. Lander (Add Mss 34,656); and 'A Social Study of Roman Catholicism in West Sussex in the Eighteenth Century' by Mary K. Kinoulty (Add Mss 34,673). The documents range in date from a title deed of property in Billingshurst, c.1248-1296 (Add Mss 33,426) to some notes on the Stanhope-Lovell family, 1984 (Add Mss 34,019)

No index has been provided for this volume, as all the relevant details of this and all previous volumes have been included in the card indexes of persons, places, manors and subjects, which are to be found in the Search Room of the West Sussex Record Office

Searchers are again asked to exercise care in quoting references, and to use the form Add Mss followed by the relevant number or numbers.
