Description (What the record is about)
-
The 1830 catalogue gives a total of 24 leaves of which only 23 are now extant. The missing item (1) was described as 'An account of the Taj Mahal in Persian' and was presumably a group of illustrations or diagrams with explanatory text. The 23 leaves are the work of Lucknow artists, especially Sital Das, and were apparently prepared to Johnson's order. The subjects are all related to practices current, or at one time current, in India: these include card games, signs of the zodiac, games, processions and a series of sacrificial ceremonies. The dominant medium is drawing with watercolour on paper, and many pictures are of comparatively large dimensions. When the collection was listed in the 1930s, no.l was already missing.
