Title
Album of views of Secunderabad, Trimulgherry and Mhow.
Date
1890s
Description

Half-leather bound album measuring 271x277mm, containing 52 prints mounted one to a page. The binding is in poor repair, with all pages detached. The prints in the album are uncaptioned (apart from print 52), but the volume is accompanied by a handwritten list (duplicated in typescript) which identifies prints 1-26 by the negative numbers which appear on the prints. The collection can be broken down into the following components:. Prints 1-14 Views of Secunderabad, by Lala Deen Dayal, 1890s. Prints 15-26 Views of Trimulgherry, by Lala Deen Dayal, 1890s. Prints 27-52 Views in and around Mhow, by J.C. Townshend, 1890s. The album was possibly compiled by a member of the family of Colonel Charles Edward Sawyer, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment: a figure identified in prints 47 and 52 as 'C.E.S.', the latter taken at Mhow in 1892, which accords with the movements of Sawyer. However, Sawyer's wife was named Florence and this does not agree with the figure, presumably the wife of C.E.S., whose initials are given as 'E.S.' in prints 47 and 52. Process = Albumen prints. Photographers = Lala Deen Dayal, J.C. Townshend;.
