Dock and Harbour Engines (57 items).
Two inverted or 'direct' single-acting engines, with 48 inch cylinders, 8 foot strokes, parallel motions, cast iron beams.
"Design for Engines proposed to be erected at Keyham near Devonport - 2 50s", London, 20 Aug. 1846 (on tracing paper); drawings from Jan. 1847 - coloured original and partially coloured reverse plans of the engine and boiler houses, longitudinal section of engine and boiler houses - coloured tracing marked "No. 3" and partially coloured reverse copy, partially coloured reverse cross-sections of the engine house, cross-section of the boiler house; plan and section of pump well culverts (not coded or dated but marked "No. 10"; partially coloured reverse sections and plans of the pumps and well, Mar. 1847; drawings from Dec. 1848 - partially coloured reverse longitudinal and transverse sections of the engine house and pump well, coloured original and partially coloured reverse plans of the engines (upper and lower floors).
Cylinder and steam case, columns and entablatures, nozzles and valves etc. - partially coloured original drawings; working barrel and stand pipes for 42 inch pumps - reverse drawing; nozzles etc., side view of cylinder and nozzles, beams and columns and condensers etc. (also reverse drawing), air and hot water pumps and condenser cisterns, beam to work the air pump and hot water pump, parallel motion for working the air pump, waste water pipes and pipes to supply condenser cistern (also reverse drawing), steam and feed pipes and safety pipes and grates etc. (also reverse drawing), injection gearing, pump rods and bangs (reverse drawing also), nozzles etc, (marked "as executed"), details of working gear components, cataract gearing (marked "as executed"), eduction pipes, eduction pipes (larger scale copy sent to the Foundry), air pump rod (not coded), launder pipes (reverse drawings), additional column and girder (also reverse drawing. All these drawings bear letter codes.
Memorandum - "List of Drawings", 15 May 1847-18 May 1848; steam pipe - 2 sketches and press copy; length of air pump rod; sketch of top of the pumps [? - unmarked]; 2 tracings of plans of the docks showing South Basin, Moon Cove, engine house, culverts etc.; tracing of section showing water levels etc. marked "sent to Soho with letter of the Hon. R. Dundas, 16 Jul. 1846".
Also the following later items: Tracing of section through building at lander pipe marked "original in Thomas Wilkinson's letter 10 Feb. 1850"; tracings of sections and plans of the pump bottoms, Jan. 1853 - marked "Copy - original sent with Sir B. W. Walker's letter of 2 Feb. 1853" (original signed by W. Edye [should be J.?] and William Stewart); tracing of clack seat and valve - replacement for broken one, by William Stewart, engineer, signed by J.
