Custodial history

The Bracebridge family were related to the Holte family of Aston Hall, Birmingham, through the marriage of Mary Elizabeth Holte 1757-1819, daughter of Sir Charles Holte, the last baronet 1721-82, to Abraham Bracebridge 1747/8-1832 of Atherstone Hall. Mr Bracebridge's financial difficulties led to the sale of the property in 1817, Mrs Bracebridge being the heir at law at that time.

The records in this collection are believed to be Holte estate papers. The Holte archive was probably split up when the property was sold, and some of it found its way into the hands of antiquarians and collectors. These papers, however, remained with the Bracebridge family.
