Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume GG3 is the third in the series of seven 'GG' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of York, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Pickering & Smith. The preferments transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in this volume include the following: the North Newbold [Newbald] Prebend Estates in 1871 by vacancy; the Grindall Prebend Estate on 9 January 1841 by vacancy; the Knaresborough Prebend Estate on 9 April 1840 by vacancy; the Langtaft Prebend Estate on 10 October 1841 by vacancy; the Wetwang Prebend Estate on 2 September 1844 by vacancy; the Strensall Prebend Estate on 18 November 1836 by vacancy; the Wistow Prebend Estate on 26 December 1851by Order in Council and published in the London Gazette 6 January 1852; and the Warthill Prebend Estate on 18 August 1852 by Order in Council and published in the London Gazette on 20 August 1852. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred.; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporate later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Yorkshire, parishes of Appleton le Street, Bishophill, Bilton, Brayton, Burlington, Gate Helmsley, Riccall, Kirkby Grindalyth, Wharram Percy, Kirkdale, Strensall, Haxby, Market Weighton, Monk Frystone, Millington, Poppleton, Marton cum Grafton, Speeton, Wetwang, Withernwick, Husthwaite, South Newbald [Newbold], North Grimston, Wistow, Langtoft, Osbaldwick, Kirby upon Wharfe, Elloughton, Fridaythorpe, York St. Olave and York St. Michael le Belfry; the county of Devon, parishes of Axminster, Membury and Kilmington; and the county of Northumberland, parish of Thockerington.
