Administrative / biographical background

The Mount Moriah Lodge was first established in 1754 and met under the Antients warrant No. 31, meeting at the Prince of Wales' Head, Butcher Row, East Smithfield, London. In December 1774 the lodge was struck off the Grand Lodge Books, as many members were not officially registered. Grand Lodge was then petitioned and in 1775 the warrant was renewed to some of the former members on the payment of 1 pound and 1 shilling to charity. The renewed lodge did not have the original warrant returned so worked under the Antients warrant No. 31B. In 1775 the lodge met at the Ship and Anchor, Gun Dock, Wapping, London. In June 1778 the warrant was given up but on the 6 March 1783 the minute of June 1778 was cancelled and the warrant was revived. The lodge met in Rosemary Lane, London. The lodge was named the Mount Moriah Lodge in 1817 and now meets at the Duke of York's Headquarters, King's Road, Chelsea, London.
