MILES FAMILY OF CLIFTON

The Rev. Henry Hugh Miles (1828-1910) was Rector of Clifton from 1858 to 1891. During his incumbency the church was restored and enlarged. "Typical of many clergymen of his day, Miles was serious in his calling, compassionate and wealthy, and determined to make his church and its worship worthy of God". (Peter Pavey, The Parish Church of All Saints Clifton (1990) p.1). Apparently Edward Haycock Junr, the Shrewsbury architect responsible for the Clifton restoration, was Miles's brother in law, having married one of the Rector's sisters. The wealth of the family derived from Henry Miles, a London furniture dealer (see article by Francis Mallett on "Miles and Edwards of London" in Furniture History Vol.VI, 1970). After disposing of the business in 1844, Henry Miles moved to his country estate at Downfield near Kington in Herefordshire using his wealth to support his son's church activities at Clifton.
