War Diary 27/11/1916: "in the afternoon 2/Lt DW Borthwick of this Company with a small patrol of the 9th King's Own returned to BREST and brought back from there a German machine gun of the latest pattern together with its tripod mountin, two spare barrels, one box of sapres and a box of ammunition. These were handed over to HQ 65 Bde."
War Diary 28/11/1916 "2/Lt Borthwick with a mixed patrol of No 4 section and the 9th King's Own again revisted BREST with the intention of bringing back the remainder of the German ammunition he had discovered on the previous day. We regret to say that 2/Lt Borthwick was killed whilst out on this patrol.";
