Description

Pumping and Canal Engines. (12 items).

Single-acting engine, with 24 inch cylinder, 6 foot stroke, chain connection.

Numbered set of drawings - coloured originals and reverse copies: 1 - general view of the engine, 2 - ground plan of the engine and boiler, 3 - front view of the engine and boiler, 4 - front view of the framing and boiler, 5 - chain link, piston rod cap, martingales, steam pipes, catch pin, adjusting screw etc.; clack and working barrel etc.; working gear - coloured original and partially coloured reverse front and side views (the reverse drawing is marked "from Gyffords") and plans.
Also reverse drawings of "working gear of the Blowing Engine [i.e. the blowing apparatus] for Shelvefield Gravels", 17 Apr. 1790 (coded PR).

For John Lawrence of Upper Shelvefield, Joshua Blakeway of Lythwood Hall, Nathaniel Betton of the Abbey Foregate, tanner, and Thomas Lloyd Anwyl of Shrewsbury and company. Shelvefield Gravels mine, Worthen, Shropshire. This engine may have been converted from a pumping to a blowing engine in 1790. The Drawings Day Book records 3 drawings of blowing apparatus made in Apr. 1790 and sent off to John Lawrence at Upper Shelvefield.
